How your item is made and how to care for it...
At Shelter & Shadows Design, every piece is carefully created using the method best suited to the material the item you select is made from.
We don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach, because different surfaces deserve different techniques to achieve the best finish, durability, and detail.

SUBLIMATION PRINTING
Sublimation is a process that uses heat and pressure to transfer a design from special ink and paper, directly into a material, creating a permenant, full colour image. The design has to be fixed tightly to the item to prevent movement during the heat process. The heating causes the inks to turn into a gas, that seeps into and bonds with the materials surface, providing vibrant, long lasting results.
Used for:
Ceramics, coated items, and polyester-based materials.
Finish:
Smooth, permanent, and vibrant—designed to last without fading, peeling, or cracking.
Aftercare:
- Dishwasher safe although over time it may cause fading (top rack recommended)
- Handwash preferable, although not essential
- Avoid abrasive pads
- Microwave safe unless otherwise stated
uvDTF PRINTING
A precision transfer method ideal for solid surfaces where detail and texture matter.
Used for:
Glass, acrylic, metal, wood, and other hard materials.
Finish:
Slightly raised, highly detailed, and visually striking.
Aftercare:
- Hand wash only
- Do not soak
- Avoid scrubbing over the design
- Not dishwasher or microwave safe
DTF FABRIC PRINTING
A flexible transfer process designed specifically for textiles.
Used for:
Cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics.
Finish:
Soft yet durable, with excellent detail on both light and dark materials.
Aftercare:
- Wash inside out at 30°C
- Do not tumble dry
- Do not iron directly over the design
- Avoid bleach or harsh detergents
